Wellington is located at the southern tip of the North Island at the Cook Strait, the stretch of sea that separates the North and South Islands. Wellington is the southernmost capital city in the world, located at the 41st parallel. It was the Maori who originally settled in the Wellington district. European settlement began with the arrival of a vanguard of the New Zealand Company on the ship Tory on 20 September 1839, followed by 150 settlers on board the ship Aurora on 22 January 1840.

In 2018, Wellington had a population of 422,700 inhabitants. (Large Norwegian encyclopedia). The town has a limited built-up area available between the harbor and the surrounding hills, and is therefore more densely populated than most other towns in New Zealand. Life in Wellington is dominated by the city’s central business district. Wellington has the highest average income of the urban areas in New Zealand, and the largest proportion of people with tertiary education. (Wikipedia).

The city is known for the beautiful, natural harbor and the green hillsides with colonial-style houses. The city’s central business district is close to Lambton Harbour. The landscape on the west side of the city rises steeply from the sea, and this means that many of the suburbs of Wellington on this side are much higher than the city core. On the hill west of the city center are the Victoria University and Wellington’s Botanic Gardens. One can reach both places by a cable car.

Wellington is particularly known for its film and theater industries. The movie «The Lord of the Rings» was filmed in New Zealand. A museum, «The Weta Cave», has been established from this film in Wellington – which we visited in 2019. Weta Workshop is a film studio that has been awarded several Oscar statuettes and is one of the world’s most highly regarded special effects companies. It is named after New Zealand’s largest insect; the grasshopper-like weta. It was Richard Taylor and Tanya Rodger who founded Weta Workshop in 1987. Here you can get a guided tour that gives you the opportunity to see the models in lifelike size, hear an interview with the team and see the experts at work. It was very interesting to visit the museum. Recommended.

We also visited the «Museum of New Zealand The Papa Tongarewa» which is New Zealand’s national museum. It is marketed and known as «Te Papa» and «Our Place». The Papa Tongarewa is Maori and translates to «the place of the treasures of this land». Furthermore, we visited «Gallipoli: The Scale of Our War», which is part of the «Museum of New Zealand The Papa Tongarewa». The award-winning exhibition tells the story of the Battle of Gallipoli in the First World War, and makes visible the human tragedies in a vivid and natural way using creative techniques. It is a fantastic exhibition that must be seen if you visit Wellington.

We also took the cable car, the «Wellington Cable Car», up to a viewpoint with a great view of the city. We then went to the «Maranui Surf Life Saving Club» and had lunch in pleasant surroundings with a great view. Wellington is a great city that we want to go back to. We recommend a visit to this beautiful city.

Videre dro vi til «Maranui Surf Life Saving Club» og spiste lunch i hyggelige omgivelser med flott utsikt. Wellington er en flott by som vi ønsker å dra tilbake til.
