PORT VILA

Port Vila is the capital and largest city of the small Pacific nation of Vanuatu. The city is located on the south coast of the island of Efate in the province of Shefa. The city had 53,000 inhabitants in 2018 (Great Norwegian Encyclopedia), while the population of Vanuatu was calculated in 2021 to be 303,000 inhabitants. Population growth is 1.67%, with a birth rate of 21.9 per 1,000. The country has a very young population where 33.7% are under 15 (Store norske leksikon). The population is mainly Melanesian. The country has three official languages, English, French and the national language Bislama.

The area around Port Vila has been inhabited by Melanesians for thousands of years. in 1606 the first Europeans arrived on the island, led by Fernandez de Quiros and Luis Vaez de Torre. After 1887, the territory was administered jointly by France and Great Britain. In 1906, the area was formalized as an Anglo-French condominium, that is to say that several states have joint control over an area. In the 19th century, French settlers established the town of Franceville, which declared independence in 1889 and became the first self-governing nation to practice suffrage regardless of gender and race. Although the population at the time consisted of about 500 native islanders and less than 50 whites, only the latter were allowed to stand for election. During World War II, Port Vila was an American and Australian air base. in 1987 a cyclone destroyed parts of the city and in January 2002 a powerful earthquake caused widespread destruction in the city and surrounding areas. Port Vila is Vanuatu’s main port and the center of the country’s trade. Major industries in the town are agriculture and fishing. Tourism has also become important, especially from Australia and New Zealand. Vanuatu is a tax haven, and offshore in Port Vila is an important part of the economy. Vanuatu is still dependent on aid, most of which comes from Australia and New Zealand, but more recently aid has also come from China. We had a short trip ashore in Port Vila. We walked around the harbor area where many of the city’s residents have set up a market where they sell various handicraft products they have made.
