The Kingdom of Thailand is a country in Southeast Asia. Thailand is bordered by Laos, Cambodia and the Gulf of Thailand (Gulf of Siam) to the east, Malaysia to the south, and the Andaman Sea and Myanmar (formerly Burma) to the west. The capital is Bangkok. The country has an area of 514,000 km², making it the world’s 50th largest country by area, and in terms of population it ranks 20th, with a population of 66,188,503 in 2017. Thailand’s origins are traditionally linked to the Kingdom of Sukhothai, founded in 1238 by the first Thai people, who had emigrated from China. Thai culture was greatly influenced by both China and India. During the 16th century, the first contacts with various European powers occurred, but despite continuous pressure, Thailand is the only country in Southeast Asia that has never been colonized by the West. Western influence has nevertheless left its mark on the country, both through trade and after threats of the use of force from, among others, Great Britain, which led to various reforms in the 19th century.

During World War II, Thailand was in a loose alliance with Japan, but after the war, the country became one of the United States’ allies in the region. The United States was seen in Thailand as support in the fight against communist rule. Communism never got a good foothold in Thailand, despite neighboring countries becoming communist states. Thailand also co-founded ASEAN (Association of South-East Asian Nations) in 1967, and after democracy was introduced in 1992, has been active in the organization’s activities. From 1992 to 2006, Thailand was a functioning democracy. In September 2006, the then controversial government was ousted through a coup d’état, and the military regained government power.

We well remember the terrible tragedy of December 26, 2004 when the southwest coast of Thailand was hit by a tsunami as a result of an earthquake in the Indian Ocean. The wave was in some places measured up to ten meters high, and more than 11,000 people lost their lives. Half of these were Western tourists. We had been in Thailand on holiday at the place where the tsunami hit the country a couple of years earlier, and it made a strong impression to see pictures of the enormous destruction and human tragedies as a result of the tsunami.

Thailand has many well-developed resorts. The country’s rich cultural heritage with many beautiful Buddhist temples and magnificent palaces makes Thailand an interesting country to travel to. Since the beginning of the 1980s, tourism has been Thailand’s most important source of foreign exchange. The main tourist destinations are the city of Bangkok and the island of Phuket. In 2017, 35.4 million foreign tourists visited Thailand, and the country was the tenth largest tourist destination in the world. (Wikipedia; Google translated).

In connection with cruises, we have visited several places in connection with cruises – such as Patong Beach in Phuket, as well as Pattaya and Bangkok. We particularly enjoyed visiting Pattaya – seeing The Sanctuary of Truth which is a wonderful masterpiece of a temple, as well as experiencing the Pattaya Floating Market. Thailands opprinnelse knyttes tradisjonelt til kongedømmet Sukhothai, grunnlagt i 1238 av det første thaifolket, som hadde utvandret fra Kina. Thai-kulturen ble i stor grad påvirket av både Kina og India. I løpet av 1500-tallet oppsto de første kontaktene med ulike europeiske makter, men på tross av kontinuerlig press er Thailand det eneste land i Sørøst-Asia som aldri har vært kolonisert av Vesten. Vestlig påvirkning har likevel satt sitt merke på landet, både gjennom handel og etter trusler om maktbruk fra blant annet fra Storbritannia, noe som førte til ulike reformer på 1800-tallet.

Under andre verdenskrig var Thailand i en løs allianse med Japan, men etter krigen ble landet en av USAs allierte i regionen. USA ble i Thailand sett på som støtte i kampen mot kommunistisk styre. Kommunismen fikk aldri godt fotfeste i Thailand, til tross for at nabolandene ble kommunistiske stater. Thailand var også med på å grunnlegge ASEAN (Association of South-East Asian Nations) i 1967, og har etter at demokratiet ble innført i 1992, vært aktiv i organisasjonens virksomhet. Fra 1992 til 2006 var Thailand et fungerende demokrati. I september 2006 ble den daværende kontroversielle regjeringen avsatt gjennom et statskupp, og militæret tok igjen regjeringsmakten.

Vi husker godt den forferdelige tragedien den 26. desember 2004 da sørvestkysten av Thailand ble rammet av en tsunami som følge av et jordskjelv i Indiahavet. Bølgen ble noen steder målt opp mot ti meter høy, og over 11 000 mennesker mistet livet. Halvparten av disse var vestlige turister. Vi hadde vært i Thailand på ferie på det stedet hvor tsunamien rammet landet et par år tidligere, og det gjorde et sterkt inntrykk å se bilder fra de enorme ødeleggelsene og de menneskelige tragediene som følge av tsunamien.

Thailand har mange godt utbygde feriesteder. Landets rike kulturarv med mange vakre buddhistiske templer og storslåtte palasser, gjør Thailand til et interessant land å reise til. Turisme har siden starten av 1980-årene vært Thailands viktigste kilde til utenlandsk valuta. De viktigste turistmålene er storbyen Bangkok og øya Phuket. I 2017 besøkte 35,4 millioner utenlandske turister Thailand, og landet var med det tiende største turistmålet i verden. (Wikipedia).
