Sri Lanka, officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka (known as Ceylon before 1972), is an island nation in South Asia. The country consists of a large main island and a number of small islands in the Indian Ocean. Sri Lanka is separated from India by the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait. The capital Colombo houses the government while the country’s legislative assembly is located in Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte. Sri Lanka in 2020 had a population of 22,889,200 inhabitants. The main group in the population are Sinhalese and Tamils. (Large Norwegian encyclopedia).

Colombo was possibly known to Roman, Arab and Chinese trading travelers more than 2,000 years ago. Muslims settled there in the 8th century and took control of much of the trade between the Sinhalese kingdoms and the rest of the world. The Portuguese arrived in the 16th century, and built a fort there to protect the spice trade. The city was then taken by the Dutch in the 17th century. By 1802, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) had become a British Crown Colony, and Colombo became its capital.

A British Crown Colony for over one hundred years, Sri Lanka gained independence on February 4, 1948, and became a republic in 1972. The country is a democratic socialist republic, and its population is ethnically and religiously diverse. The country has a long documented history, where for the last 30 years there has been an ethnic conflict between the Tamil minority and the Sinhalese-dominated government. Compared to other countries in the region, Sri Lanka has a relatively well-developed welfare system.

Major export items are clothing, tea, fruits, vegetables, rubber and fish. Major imports are machinery, transport equipment, foodstuffs, live animals, oil and chemicals. Major trading partners are Japan, India, USA and UK. (Great Norwegian encyclopedia, Wikipedia; Google translated).

We visited Sri Lanka in connection with a cruise from Abu Dhabi to Singapore in 2018. We were there for one day, and then took part in a sightseeing trip organized by the cruise company to the city of Colombo. It was an interesting trip and we would have liked to see more of the city. Colombo var muligens kjent for romerske, arabiske og kinesiske handelsreisende for mer enn 2000 år siden. Muslimer slo seg ned der det i det 8.  århundre, og tok kontroll over mye av handelen mellom de singalesiske kongerikene og resten av verden. Portugiserne ankom i det 16. århundre, og bygde et fort der for å beskytte handelen med krydder. Byen ble så tatt av nederlenderne i det 17. århundre. I 1802 var Ceylon (nå Sri Lanka) blitt en britisk kronkoloni, og Colombo ble hovedstad i denne.

Landet har en lang dokumentert historie, hvor det de siste 30 årene har vært en etnisk konflikt mellom den tamilske minoriteten og den singalesiskdominerte regjeringen.  Sammenlignet med andre land i regionen har Sri Lanka et relativt godt utbygget velferdssystem.

Vi besøkte Sri Lanka i forbindelse med cruise fra Abu Dhabi til Singapore i 2018. Vi var der en dag, og var da med på en sightseeingtur arrangert av cruiseselskapet til i byen Colombo.
