Split is a city in Croatia located on the Adriatic Sea. It has a population of 161,312 inhabitants in 2021, and is the second largest city after the capital Zagreb (Great Norwegian Encyclopedia). The city was founded around 200 AD. During World War II, in 1941, Split was occupied by Italy. Two years later, partisans liberated the city, before Germany then occupied the area. After the war, the area again became part of Yugoslavia, but when the country was dissolved in 1991, Split became part of Croatia. After the war, the city experienced dynamic growth and became an important tourist centre. The city is the economic and administrative center of Croatia, and has many cultural and historical sights (Wikipedia). The entire old town of Split, which was built between the years 295-305, was in 1979 listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List (Great Norwegian Encyclopedia; Google translated).

We have been to Split both in connection with a cruise and that we have been on holiday in the neighboring town of Trogir where we took a day trip by boat into the city. It is very pleasant to visit Split and walk around the venerable old town, and take in impressions from the historic buildings, including Emperor Diocletian’s palace, which is considered one of the world’s best-preserved examples of Roman architecture. We recommend visiting this beautiful city. I would also like to mention that Trondheim has had friendly cooperation with Split since 1956.

Byen ble grunnlagt rundt år 200 e. Kr. Under andre verdenskrig, i 1941, ble Split okkupert av Italia. To år etter frigjorde partisaner byen, før Tyskland så okkuperte området. Vi har vært i Split både i forbindelse med cruise samt at vi har vært på ferie i nabobyen Trogir hvor vi tok en dagstur med båt inn til byen. Det er veldig koselig å besøke byen og vandre rundt i ærverdige gamlebyen, og ta inn inntrykk fra de historiske bygningene blant annet med keiser Diokletians palass, som ansees som et av verdens bevarte eksempler på romersk arkitektur. Vi anbefaler å besøke denne vakre byen. Vil samtidig nevne at Trondheim har hatt vennskapssamarbeid med Split siden 1956.
