Skagway is a city in the composite urban municipality of Skagway with 1,191 inhabitants in 2020. (Wikipedia). In the summer, however, the population doubles, this in order to handle the more than 900,000 tourists who come to the city each year. Among others, there is a large influx of fishermen and other seasonal workers, many of whom are of Norwegian descent. (Large Norwegian encyclopedia).

Skagway was founded in 1887 by steamship captain William Moore. The «White Pass and Yukon Route» narrow-gauge railway to Whitehorse in Canada was built during the gold rush of the late 1890s, and is now operated as a tourist railway during the summer months. In connection with the gold rush in Alaska, Skagway was an important support point for the gold diggers during the gold rush, and was the starting point for the routes over the White Pass and Chilkoot Pass to the Klondike and Alaska (Wikipedia; Google translated).

The harbor in Skagway is a popular stop for cruise ships, and the tourism industry makes up a large part of the business life in the city. It was exciting to come to Skagway where we got an insight into the history of the town that we had heard a lot about beforehand.

Havna i Skagway er et populært stopp for cruiseskip, og turistnæringen utgjør en stor del av næringslivet i byen. Det var spennende å komme til Skagway hvor vi fikk et innblikk i historien til byen som vi hadde hørt mye om på forhånd.
