Sicily has been an autonomous region of Italy since 1946, and is the Mediterranean’s largest island with around 5,000,000 inhabitants (2019). The capital is Palermo. In 1860, Sicily was incorporated into Italy after Guiseppe Garibaldi had led a military expedition on the island. Towards the end of the 19th century, the old associations that are the basis of the mafia began to grow stronger and became heavily involved in crime. We were in Sicily in 2019 in connection with a cruise in the Mediterranean. We strolled around the city, went inside the cathedral, «Duomo di Messina», had a coffee at a cozy outdoor restaurant where we sat outside in lovely sunshine and just enjoyed the presence and experienced the people’s life.

Vi var på Sicilia i 2019 i forbindelse med et cruise i Middelhavet. Vi ruslet rundt i byen, var inne i domkirken, «Duomo di Messina», tok en kaffe på en koselig uterestaurant hvor vi satt ute i deilig solskinn samt å bare nyte tilstedeværelsen og oppleve folkelivet.
