Apia is the capital and largest city in Samoa with 37,391 inhabitants in 2016. (Great Norwegian Encyclopedia). The town is located on the north coast of Upolu, Samoa’s second largest island. It still exists within the larger modern capital of Apia, which has grown into an urban area with many villages. The modern capital, Apia, was founded in 1850, and has been the official capital of Samoa since 1959.

The port of Apia is the largest and busiest in Samoa. Apia is a trading center with the shipping of copra and fish being the country’s largest export items, while cotton goods, vehicles, meat and sugar are the largest import items. There are also ferries from here to American Samoa and the Tokelau archipelago in the South Pacific.

Apia has a well-developed and maintained road network, which is paved where the traffic is greatest. Traffic has driven on the left since 2009, and the speed limits near the center of the city are 40 km/h, 56 km/h in the rest of the country and 24 km/h in special cases. There are good bus connections, but there are no trams or trains. There are few bicycles and motorbikes, but car traffic is increasing, which leads to chaos in the center of the city. We were in Apia in connection with a Pacific Ocean cruise from Hawaii to Sydney in Australia in 2014. It was exciting to get to the islands in the Pacific Ocean. We have hardly heard of many of them before, and they were great experiences for us. When the cruise ship docked in Apia, we were greeted with hospitality, music and a dance performance. We chose to walk around the city, look at people’s life and visit sights in the city centre. Among other things, we visited the beautiful cathedral «Immaculate Conception Cathedral», looked at the fishermen who stood out in the sea and cast nets for fish, went to a cafe and it was just good to be able to walk around and collect impressions from this cozy city.

Vi var i Apia i forbindelse med cruise Stillehavet fra Hawaii til Sydney i Australia i 2014. Det var spennende å komme til øyene i Stillehavet. Mange av dem har vi knapt hørt om tidligere, og det var for oss flotte opplevelser. Da cruiseskipet la til havn i Apia ble vi møtt med gjestfrihet, musikk og danseoppvisning. Vi valgte å gå rundt i byen, se på folkelivet og besøke severdigheter i sentrum. Blant annet besøkte vi den vakre katedralen «Immaculate Conception Cathedral», så på fiskerne som sto ute i sjøen og kastet garn etter fisk, var på kafe og det var bare godt å kunne vandre rundt og samle inntrykk fra denne koselige byen.
