Safaga is a small port city in Egypt on the coast of the Red Sea with 9,585 inhabitants in 2017 (Wikipedia). The place is a center for the export of phosphate as a result of all the phosphate mines there. Founded between 282 and 268 BC, Safaga was a port and trading city for many years.

Today, the city with its wide sky-blue bay, long sandy beaches and beautiful islands is a tourist destination on the Red Sea Riviera. The tourism industry is thriving, and is considered one of the premier therapeutic tourist centers due to the availability of phosphate as an agent for climate therapeutic medicine. The place’s unpolluted atmosphere, black sand dunes and mineral springs can act as medical treatment for ailments such as arthritis and psoriasis. The black dunes are particularly suitable for sunbathing, and the sea water is very salty and rich in minerals that are beneficial for the skin. (Wikipedia; Google translated).

We were in Safaga in connection with a cruise from Dubai to Barcelona in 2013. Although the cruise company had great excursions to Luxor, among others, we chose to walk around the city and experience the people’s life and enjoy the atmosphere of the place.

Vi var i Safaga i forbindelse med cruise fra Dubai til Barcelona i 2013. Selv om cruiseselskapet hadde flotte utflukter blant annet til Luxor, så valgte vi å gå rundt i byen og oppleve folkelivet og nyte atmosfæren  på stedet.
