Rhodes city is the capital of the island of Rhodes in the Dodecanese in Greece. The Dodecanese are an archipelago in the Aegean Sea between Greece and Turkey. In this archipelago there are 12 large islands and around 150 smaller islands, of which 26 are permanent residents. Figures from 2011 show that there are a total of 115,490 inhabitants on the island of Rhodes, of which approximately half live in the city of Rhodes (Great Norwegian Encyclopedia).

Rhodes has been known since ancient times for the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven wonders. The Colossus was a huge statue of the Greek sun god Helios, which was erected in the 2nd century BC. The fortifications around the old town of Rhodes, which were built by the Order of Saint John (later known as the Order of Malta) in 1309, are shaped like a crescent around the medieval town. The walls were reinforced in 1480 by the Grand Master Fabrizio del Carreto, and when he died in 1521 Rhodes had one of the strongest fortifications in the world. The fortifications and the old town, which is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe and was included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1988. There have been a number of film recordings that have used the old town of Rhodes – including «The Cannons of Navarone». (Wikipedia).

Rhodes town is a popular tourist destination and we have been there on holiday in 2007 and 2016. In 2007 we were on holiday in Rhodes town. We then stayed in a cozy hotel in the center of Rhodes town within walking distance to most everything, including the old town. It was a very special experience to walk through this medieval town built on a long and eventful history. It was a great experience to sit down at the outdoor restaurants there at tables with red checkered tablecloths and with lit candles on the tables, while we ate delicious Greek food with wine and just enjoyed the atmosphere and the people’s life. Other days we sought out more secluded restaurants where we could eat a good meal in a pleasant and quiet atmosphere. On this trip we also took part in boat trips from Rhodes town to Lindos and likewise to Marmaris in Turkey, which were certainly nice trips. (Wikipedia).

In 2016, we visited Rhodos with family and stayed at «Sunwing Kallithea Resort», a family facility that was very good both for adults and especially children. We stayed in spacious apartments with a balcony and all inclusive – which was very good when traveling with children. We also went to the Water Park in Faliraki, which was an exciting and fun experience for both young and old. Also, the bus trip to and from Faliraki was a special trip with an overcrowded bus but with a jovial bus driver who made the trip a fun experience. We also went into the center one day, but it was uncomfortably hot in the middle of July, so we had to seek shady places and the trip with small children was therefore short. We recommend Rhodes and Rhodes city.

Tall fra 2011 viser at det bor totalt 115 490 innbyggere på øya Rhodos, hvorav cirka halvparten bor i Rhodos by (Store norske leksikon).

Rhodos har vært kjent siden antikken for Kolossen på Rhodos, et av de syv underverker. Kolossen var en enorm statue av den greske solguden Helios, som ble reist på 200-tallet f. Kr. Festningsverkene rundt gamlebyen Rhodos, som ble bygd av Johanitterordenen (senere kjent som Malteserordenen) i 1309, er formet som en halvmåne rundt middelalderbyen. Murene ble forsterket i 1480 av stormesteren Fabrizio del Carreto, og da han døde i 1521 hadde Rhodos et av de sterkeste festningsverkene i verden. Festningsverkene og gamlebyen som er en av de best bevarte middelalderbyene i Europa og kom i 1988 på UNESCO’s verdensarvliste. Rhodos by er en populær turistdestinasjon og vi har vært der på ferie i 2007 og 2016. I 2007 var vi på ferie i Rhodos by. Vi bodde da på et koselig hotell sentralt i Rhodos by med gåavstand til det meste, blant annet gamlebyen. Det var en helt spesiell opplevelse å vandre gjennom denne middelalderbyen bygget på en lang og begivenhetsrik historie. Det var en fin opplevelse å sitte ned på uterestaurantene der ved bord med rødrutete duker og med tente lys på bordene, mens vi spiste nydelig gresk mat med vin til og bare nyte stemningen og folkelivet. Andre dager oppsøkte vi mer tilbaketrukkede restauranter hvor vi kunne spise et godt måltid mat i en behagelig og rolig atmosfære. På denne turen var vi også med på båtturer fra Rhodos by til Lindos og likedan til Marmaris i Tyrkia, som absolutt var fine turer.

I 2016 var vi der med familie og bodde på «Sunwing Kallithea Resort», et familieanlegg som var veldig bra både for voksne og spesielt barn. Vi bodde i romslige leiligheter med balkong og all inklusive – noe som var veldig greit når man reiser med barn. Vi dro også til Vannparken i Faliraki som var en spennende og morsom opplevelse både for store og små. Dessuten var bussturen til og fra Faliraki en spesiell tur med en overfylt buss, men med en humørfylt bussjåfør som gjorde turen til en morsom opplevelse. Vi dro også inn til sentrum en dag, men det var ubehagelig varmt i midten i juli, slik at vi måtte søke til skyggefulle steder og turen med små barn ble derfor kort. Vi anbefaler Rhodos og Rhodos by.
