Raiatea is an island in the Society Islands of French Polynesia. There are three municipalities on the island, Uturoa, Taputapuatea and Tumaraa. The 2012 census showed a population of 12,832 in the three municipalities combined, making it the fourth largest island in French Polynesia. Before Christianity was introduced, the island was an important religious center, which housed the most important place of worship, marae Taputapuatea, that is, an ancient monument consisting of several marae, places of worship on Raiatea. Marae is a religious and social gathering place with several functions in the pre-Christian cultures of Polynesia. Raiatea is located 210 kilometers northwest of Tahiti. The island is four kilometers south of Tahaa, with which it shares a lagoon and coral reef. Mount Temehani is 772 meters above sea level. The mountain plateau here has vegetation with rare endemic species, and 26 plant species are found only in this area. A further 48 species are endemic to the island of Raiatea. particularly famous is the threatened plant species «Tiare apetahi» which can only be found on Mount Temehani, has made it one of the island’s symbols. We were on Raiatea in connection with a cruise in the Pacific Ocean on our way from Sydney Australia to Hawaii in 2010. We were interested in seeing as much of the island as possible, and therefore signed up for a sightseeing trip around the island by local bus arranged by the cruise company. It was an experience for us to come to this beautiful Pacific island and see the beautiful and lush nature there.

Vi var på Raiatea i forbindelse med cruise i Stillehavet på vei fra Sydney Australia til Hawaii i 2010. Vi var interessert å få sett mest mulig av øya, og meldte oss derfor på en sightseeingtur rundt på øya med lokalbuss som ble arrangert av cruiseselskapet. Det var for oss en opplevelse å komme til denne flotte stillehavsøya og se den vakre og frodige naturen der.
