Portugal, officially the Portuguese Republic, is a country in southwestern Europe. The mainland borders Spain, is part of the Iberian Peninsula and has a long coastline towards the Atlantic Ocean. Portugal comprises the semi-autonomous archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira in the Atlantic Ocean. Capital is Lisbon. Portugal covers an area of 92,391 km², and had 10.28 million inhabitants in 2019.

Portugal is one of Europe’s oldest states. Portugal was Europe’s first colonial power and the last to grant its colonies independence, with the exception of Brazil, which became independent in 1822. From the 15th century, the Portuguese Empire was one of the world’s largest, including Brazil, Portuguese India and large areas of Africa . Portugal’s grip on the colonies loosened through the Portuguese Colonial War and India’s conquest of Goa in the 1960s and 1970s. Despite the fact that the country once ruled over a gigantic trading empire, today the country is among the least competitive countries in the EU (Great Norwegian Encyclopedia). When Portugal became a member of the EU in 1986, it was one of the poorest countries in Western Europe. From the 1980s onwards, there has been a lot of investment in factories, infrastructure (roads, hydropower) and housing. Portugal has few mineral deposits of value apart from some tungsten, copper and tin. In the 1990s, clothing, leather, footwear and textiles accounted for around 40% of exports. Furthermore, the service sector and tourism accounted for well over 50% of employment. Tourism has an ever-increasing importance for the country’s economy. Tourism became a growing industry from the 1960s. The Algarve in particular with its Mediterranean climate, beaches and cliffs has attracted many visitors. In the 1980s and 1990s, the number of tourists increased by over 10% annually and tourism then accounted for 6% of GDP (Wikipedia; Google translated).

Da Portugal ble medlem av EU i 1986 var det et av de fattigste landene i Vest-Europa. Fra 1980-årene av har det vært investert mye i fabrikker, infrastruktur (veier, vannkraft) og boliger. Portugal har få mineralforekomster av verdi bortsett fra litt wolfram, kobber og tinn. I 1990-årene utgjorde klær, lær, skotøy og tekstiler omkring 40 % av eksporten. Videre sto tjenesteytende sektor samt turisme for vel 50 % av sysselsettingen. Turismen har en stadig økende betydning for landets økonomi. Turisme ble en voksende næring fra 1960-årene. Særlig Algarve med sitt middelhavsklima, strender og klipper har tiltrukket seg mange besøkende. I 1980- og 1990-årene økte antallet turister med over 10 % årlig og turismen utgjorde da 6 % av BNP (Wikipedia).
