In the 16th century, Manhattan was divided between a number of Indian tribes. In 1524, the first European, Giovanni da Verrazano, sailed up to Manhattan. A hundred years later, the Englishman Henry Hudson sailed up the river that separates Manhattan and New Jersey, hence the name Hudson. The first European settlement there took place in 1614. The number of Indians, which was previously up to 5,000, decreased until the year 1700 to approx. 200. New York was the first stop in the United States for many immigrants, and part of the 20 million who came to the country settled in New York.

In the 1970s, the city was strongly affected by economic problems, racial antagonisms, poverty and crime. This has subsequently improved, and today it is New York that has the lowest crime rate of the American cities. In 2001, both twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York were destroyed by a terrorist attack by Al-Qaeda. The place where the buildings stood was named «Ground Zero».

We have been to New York several times, including in connection with cruises. Our destination on the cruise was Manhattan. It is always exciting to visit this metropolis with its tall buildings and bustling public life, which is full of experiences for every taste according to what is desired. The one time we were there we took «Hop-On-Hop-OFF buses», which was a great way to see the city, and where you can get on and off depending on what you want to see and experience. Likewise, the view of Manhattan from the Empire State Building is worth seeing both during the day and at night. We also visited the «Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum» which was located by the Hudson River. Here we saw, among other things, the take-off and landing deck of the USS Interpretid as well as a cruise missile submarine (USS Growler) and more. For those who want it, there are also plenty of opportunities for shopping, cultural activities, cafes, restaurants or take a boat trip on the Hudson River. We also went to a concert in the legendary American jazz club «Cotton Club » which is located in the district of Harlem in New York. It was an unforgettable evening with wonderful artists and musicians. It is always an experience to come to this city full of experiences.

Den ene gangen vi var der tok vi «Hop-On-Hop-OFF busser», som var en flott måte å få sett byen på, og hvor en kan gå av og på etter hva en ønsker å se og oppleve. Likedan utsikten over Manhattan fra Empire State Building er verdt å få med seg både på dag- og kveldstid. Vi besøkte også «Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum» som lå ved Hudson River. Her så vi blant annet start- og landingsdekket på USS Interpretid samt en krysserrakettubåt (USS Growler) med mer. For den som ønsker det er det dessuten masse muligheter for shopping, kulturelle aktiviteter, caféer, restauranter eller ta en tur med båt på Hudson River. Vi var også på konsert i den legendariske amerikanske jazzklubben «Cotton Club» som ligger i bydelen Harlem i New York. Det var en uforglemmelig aften med fantastiske artister og musikere. Det er alltid en opplevelse å komme til denne opplevelsesrike byen.
