The beautiful location as well as the number of museums, monuments and archaeological sites in and around the city, as well as famous destinations such as Capri, Ischia and Sorrento, have laid the foundations for significant tourism and made the city one of the most visited in the world.

Naples was probably founded around the 8th century BC. The city’s ancient street network is largely preserved in Naples’ old center, which was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995, as well as expanded to include protected archaeological sites. Near the city is the volcano Vesuvius, which is the only active volcano on the European mainland. A violent eruption in 79 buried the cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae. We have been to Naples twice in connection with a Mediterranean cruise where Naples was one of the destinations. It was a short walk from the cruise port and up to the center of the city. This led to us strolling around the city to experience the people’s life, the atmosphere, the historic buildings, ate Neapolitan pizza at an outdoor restaurant, ate Italian ice cream and more. If we come to Naples again, a visit to the excavations of Pompeii is on the wish list.

Vi har vært i Napoli to ganger i forbindelse med Middelhavscruise hvor Napoli var en av destinasjonene. Det var kort gåavstand fra cruisehavnen og opp til sentrum av byen. Det ble til at vi ruslet rundt i byen for å oppleve folkelivet, atmosfæren, de historiske bygningene, spiste napolitansk pizza på uterestaurant, spiste italiensk is med mer.
