Corfu is an island in Greece in the Ionian Sea, that is, the part of the Mediterranean that lies between Italy, Albania and Greece. The capital of the island and the municipal center is also called Corfu with a population of 32,095 inhabitants, while 111,975 inhabitants lived on the island of Corfu in 2017. (Wikipedia).

The earliest reference to Corfu is in the Mycenaean-Greek word «ko-ro-ku-ra-i-jo» written in Linear B sometime around 1300 BC. Linear B is a syllabic script that was used to write Mycenaean Greek, which is the oldest form of documented Greek. The island’s history is filled with battles and conquests. The legacy of these battles is visible in the form of fortresses that are located at all the strategic locations across the island. Two of these fortresses surround the capital and which is the only city in Greece to be surrounded in this way. It has resulted in the city being publicly declared a «fortress city» by the Greek government. In several parts of the old town there are houses from the Venetian era, with narrow and old side streets and archways that are particularly reminiscent of Venice. In 2007, the city’s old quarter was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List, following the recommendation of ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites). (Wikipedia; Google translated).
