Alaska is the largest state in the USA in terms of area and has 733,391 inhabitants. The capital is Juneau. Alaska is also referred to as the «Land of the Midnight Sun» as well as «The Last Frontier». From 1861, gold discoveries were made in Alaska, and in 1896 the great Klondike gold rush started, in which 100,000 people participated. Gradually people became aware of the area’s rich natural resources. Alaska is the largest producer of fish in the United States. The rivers and adjacent sea areas are rich in fish such as salmon, halibut, herring, cod and shellfish and this forms the basis for a rich fishery and a large fish processing industry. In 1977, the 1,300 kilometer long oil pipeline «Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS)» was completed, and oil production has since been important for Alaska’s economy and business (Det store norske lexikon; Google translated). We were on a cruise to Alaska where the destinations there were Juneau, Skagway, Inside Passage, Ketchikan and Tracy Arm Fjord.

Juneau, which is the capital of Alaska, is named after the gold digger Joe Juneau who discovered large deposits of gold in the area. The harbor in Juneau is ice-free all year round and much of the economy is based on fishing and the fishing industry as well as growing tourism. As mentioned, we visited Juneau in connection with the cruise to Alaska, and it was great to get there and experience the city we had heard so much about.
