Ho Chi Minh is the largest city in Vietnam with 8,636,829 inhabitants in 2019. The city was previously called Saigon until 1976 and then changed to the name Ho Chi Minh, with the same name as the former president of North Vietnam. The city has become the country’s economic and industrial center and is the leading growth center in Vietnam. The country is the world’s second largest producer of coffee after Brazil and the world’s third largest exporter of rice. Fishing also provides important export income. The country’s national university is the largest in the city with more than 60,000 students and 5,000 employees (Great Norwegian Encyclopedia). We had heard a lot about Vietnam in connection with the mentioned Vietnam War which lasted from 1955 until 1975. The war started when the FNL guerrillas who supported North Vietnam rebelled against the South Vietnamese government in order to unite Vietnam under communist leadership. The USA therefore became heavily involved in the war on the South Vietnamese side (Wikipedia: Google translated). Based on this history we brought with us from Vietnam, it was particularly interesting to visit this city.

Byen er blitt landets økonomiske og industrielle senter og er det ledende vekstsenteret i Vietnam. Landet er verdens nest største produsent av kaffe etter Brasil og verdens tredje største eksportør av ris. Fiske gir også viktige eksportinntekter. Vi hadde hørt mye om Vietnam i forbindelse med den omtalte Vietnamkrigen som pågikk fra 1955 fram til 1975. Krigen startet da FNL-geriljaen som støttet Nord-Vietnam, gikk til opprør mot det sørvietnamiske styret for å forene Vietnam under kommunistisk ledelse. USA involverte seg derfor sterkt i krigen på Sør- Vietnamisisk side (Wikipedia: Google translated). På bakgrunn av denne historien vi hadde med oss fra Vietnam var det spesielt interessant å besøke denne byen.
