The Cayman Islands are an archipelago in the Caribbean Sea, and consist of three flat islands, Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. Grand Cayman is the largest of the Cayman Islands, and it lies south of Cuba and northwest of Jamaica. The capital of the Cayman Islands is George Town. In 2018, Grand Cayman had a population of 63,807 inhabitants. George Town has the largest population with 34,878 (2018). Grand Cayman is a world-renowned center for offshore banking and investment. Finance and tourism are the main industries in the Cayman Islands. There are several hundred banks in business and the tax legislation means that the islands are considered tax havens. Christopher Columbus reached the islands in 1503. He named them Las Tortugas. Spain claimed sovereignty over the Cayman Islands, but in 1655 they were conquered by England. Grand Cayman and the two smaller neighboring islands, the Sister Islands, have since been British. Grand Cayman is divided into six districts; Bodden Town, East End, George Town, North Side, West Bay. The remaining district is the Sister Islands, which consists of the islands of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. (Wikipedia).

Grand Cayman is a low island, which at its highest reaches just over 18 meters above sea level. The island is dominated in the north by the large lagoon North Sound, which is protected by a reef at its outlet in the north. The west coast of the island is characterized by the long sandy beach Seven Mile Beach. Due to its clubs, resorts and hotels, Seven Mile Beach has the largest concentration of visitors and tourists on the island. Water sports such as diving and snorkeling are popular activities on Grand Cayman, which is known for its coral reefs and underwater sea walls along with a number of shipwrecks. Owen Roberts International Airport, serves Grand Cayman in the Cayman Islands. It is the main international airport for the Cayman Islands as well as the main base for Cayman Airways. (Wikipedia).

We were on Grand Cayman in connection with a cruise in the Caribbean, specifically in the capital George Town. We used the day to look around the town, visited a church and otherwise wandered around and looked at people’s life there. Unfortunately, few photos were taken from the island.

Vestkysten av øya er preget av den lange sandstranden Seven Mile Beach. På grunn av sine klubber, feriesteder og hoteller har Seven Mile Beach den største konsentrasjonen av besøkende og turister på øya.  Vannsport som dykking og snorkling er populære aktiviteter på Grand Cayman, som er kjent for sine korallrev og undervanns sjøvegger sammen med en rekke skipsvrak. Vi var på Grand Cayman i forbindelse med cruise i Karibien, nærmere bestemt i hovedstaden George Town. Vi brukte dagen til å se oss om i byen, besøkte en kirke og ellers vandret omkring og så på folkelivet der. Det ble dessverre tatt lite bilder fra øya.
