SUVA

Suva is the capital of Fiji and is located in the southeast of the island of Viti Levu. Suva became the capital in 1877 when the colonial power moved its headquarters from Levuka to Suva. Government House, which today serves as the presidential residence, was first built in 1882 as a house for the colonial administration, but was rebuilt in 1921 after a lightning strike.

We were on Suva in connection with a cruise in the Pacific Ocean from Hawaii to Sydney in Australia in 2014. When the cruise ship docked we were greeted with hospitality, horn music and a dance performance. We wandered around the city and visited the Grand Pacific Hotel, which has been popular since it was built in 1914. The hotel was about two kilometers from the cruise port, and we went there to have lunch. The hotel was beautifully located by the sea with a view over the sea, where we saw fishermen pulling nets and seeking their luck in fishing. We were met by an employee when we got there who asked if we wanted to see the hotel, which we agreed to, and we were guided around. Among other things, he showed us the suite in which Queen Elizabeth II stayed when she visited with Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in 1953, 1973, 1977 and 1982. It was a memorable trip for us, where we were greeted with a hospitality that we will soon forget.
