Estonia is a republic in Europe on the eastern Baltic Sea. The country borders the Gulf of Finland to the north, Latvia to the south, Russia to the east and the Baltic Sea to the west, with a total coastline of 3,794 kilometers and a total of 2,222 islands. Estonia is the smallest and northernmost of the three Baltic states. After being annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940, the country regained its independence in 1991. The authorities’ relationship with Russia and the large Russian minority in the country is bad.

The name Estonia may be after the ethnic group Esters, mentioned in written sources from the first century AD, or the old Norse name Eistland, from the folk name eistr (‘land of the Estonians’).

After 1991, tourism, especially to Tallinn, has been increasing. In 2017, more than six million tourists visited Estonia. 2.9 million of these tourists were in the country for just one day. (Great Norwegian encyclopedia, Wikipedia; Google translated).
