Ephesus was an ancient Greek city on the west coast of Asia Minor, south of Smyrna (now Izmir in Turkey). The city was founded by Greek colonists at the end of the 2nd millennium BC, and was an important trading city and cultural center. In the city’s heyday under the Roman emperors, it had a population of perhaps 300,000 inhabitants. In Ephesus was the Temple of Artemis, which is considered one of the seven wonders of the world. It was destroyed by the Goths in 276, and today only ruins remain. (Large Norwegian encyclopedia). According to Christian legends, the Virgin Mary, Jesus’ mother, is said to have died in Ephesus after going there with the apostle John after the crucifixion (Wikipedia). Today’s Ephesus is a pilgrimage destination especially for tourists, and they first visit the ancient archaeological ruins after the theater and the library. We were in Ephesus on an 11 night cruise in 2015 in the Eastern Mediterranean. The cruise went from Istanbul to the destinations Katakolon, Corfu and Athens in Greece, as well as Split and Dubrovnik in Croatia and to Ephesus, Turkey and back to Istanbul. In Ephesus there were many opportunities to take part in excursions to interesting places and cultural sights organized by the cruise company, but we chose here to walk around in the city, experience the people’s life. shopping and sitting down at an outdoor restaurant and just enjoying the presence there.
