Dunedin is New Zealand’s oldest and the second largest city in the South Island with 123,800 inhabitants (2017). (Wikipedia). The city is also home to New Zealand’s oldest university, Otago, which was founded in 1869. The university accounts for around 20% of the city’s population. The growing number of students has led to a lively youth culture, and more recently a growing fashion industry. There are also good opportunities for sports activities with arenas for rugby, cricket, football, athletics, golf and jogging tracks, public swimming pools and the famous surfing beach St. Clair Beach. According to the Guinness Book of Records, the world’s steepest street, called Baldwin Street, is also located in Dunedin. The beautiful railway station from 1906 is no longer in use by regular passenger trains, but is used by local tourist train traffic. This building testifies to an impressive architecture from the gold rush era around the 1860s in the city. Dunedin is also home to rare yellow-eyed penguins, fur seals and the world’s only albatross colony on land that shares its home there. (Tripadvisor; Google translated).

Universitetet står for omlag 20% av befolkningen i byen. Den økende studentmengden har medført en livlig ungdomskultur, og i senere tid en økende moteindustri. Det er også gode muligheter for sportsaktiviteter med arenaer for rugby, cricket, fotball, friidrett, golf- og travbaner, offentlige svømmebasseng samt den kjente surfestranda St. Clair Beach. I ifølge Guinness rekordbok ligger også verdens bratteste gate som heter Baldwin Street i Dunedin. Den vakre jernbanestasjonen fra 1906 er ikke lenger i bruk av vanlige passasjertog, men blir brukt av lokal turisttogtrafikk. Dette byggverket vitner om en imponerende arkitektur fra gullrushtiden rundt 1860-tallet i byen.
