Dubrovnik is an old city in Croatia located on the coast of the Adriatic Sea, and has 44,695 inhabitants in 2020 (Great Norwegian Encyclopedia). Dubrovnik was founded in the year 639, and is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Dubrovnik was subjected to a violent bomb attack during the war in the former Yugoslavia in 1991, where large parts of the old town suffered damage – which has later been rehabilitated. Dubrovnik is one of Europe’s largest tourist destinations. The city is often called the «Pearl of the Adriatic» and is considered one of the most beautiful and best-preserved cities in the Mediterranean area.

We have visited Dubrovnik twice in connection with our cruise in the Mediterranean. It is always just as nice to come back to experience the beautiful and interesting city – especially the old town. It is special to see the large fortress walls that were built in the 15th – 16th centuries, and which surround the old town with towers and bastions (Great Norwegian Encyclopedia). It was also interesting to walk along the main street, the Plaza, which is made of polished marble, as well as all the small, narrow and crooked streets in the old town. Det er spesielt å se de store festningsmurene som er reist på 1400 – 1500-tallet, og som omgir gamlebyen med tårn og bastioner (Store norske leksikon). Likedan var det interessant å vandre langs hovedgaten Plazaen som er i blankpolert marmor, samt alle de små og trange og krokete gatene i gamlebyen. På utsiktpunktet i gamlebyen er det en rekke uterestauranter og et yrende folkeliv. Vi anbefaler å besøke denne vakre byen – særlig gamlebyen.
