Curaçao is an island in the Caribbean. Together with the Netherlands, Aruba and Sint Maarten, it forms the «Kingdom of the Netherlands», where the monarch of the Netherlands is the head of state. The country is a parliamentary democracy that manages its own internal affairs. Curaçao has its own constitution of 2010. Curaçao is located just off the coast of Venezuela, and is the largest and most populous of the so-called ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao). The population as of 1 January 2020 was 156,223. Willemstad was founded in 1634, when the Dutch conquered Curaçao from Spain. Fort Amsterdam was built in the same year. The fortifications Waterfort and Riffort were built in the 1820s. The townhouses were originally whitewashed, but in 1817 the tradition began of painting them in different colours, often in red, blue, ocher and different shades of green, which makes Willemstad a particularly colorful city. The island has different architectural styles that reflect the influence of the various historical rulers of the region, including Spain and the Netherlands. This ranges from ruins and colonial buildings to modern infrastructure.

The liqueur curaçao is named after the island. It originally got its flavor from the peel of the pomeranus (an orange fruit), which on the island is called laraha. The economy is characterized by tourism, oil refining, banking and finance, trade and logistics. Around 14% of the country’s income comes from tourism. We visited Willemstad on a cruise in 2018. We spent the day walking around the colorful city, which makes it stand out from most other places we’ve visited in the Caribbean. We walked aruond in the town, shopped and of course we had a stop where we were served the island’s national drink «Curacao liqueur». Curacao is a great city that we really want to go back to. We can certainly recommend a visit to this beautiful island.

Vi besøkte Willemstad i forbindelse med et cruise i 2018. Vi brukte dagen til en spasertur i den fargerike byen, som gjør at den skiller seg ut i forhold til de fleste andre steder vi har besøkt i Karibien. Noe tid til shopping ble det også, og selvfølgelig måte vi ha en stopp der vi fikk servert øyas nasjonaldrikk «Curacao-likør». Curacao er en flott by som vi har veldig lyst til å dra tilbake til. Vi kan absolutt anbefale et besøk til denne flotte øya.
