Cozumel is a Mexican island and municipality in the Caribbean Sea belonging to the state of Quintana Roo. Cozumel is located approximately 20 kilometers from the mainland and transport there is by boat from Playa del Carmen. Cozumel is Mexico’s largest island by population, with an area of 647.33 km². In 2010 it had 79,535 inhabitants The majority of the population of Cozumel lives in the city of San Miguel..

Off the south side of the island is the Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park and there are several Mayan ruins on the island. The largest archaeological site is San Gervasio located in the middle of the island. The island is famous as a tourist destination, and lives off tourism with activities such as diving and snorkelling. Diving enthusiasts from all over the world have visited Cozumel since the 60s. The beautiful corals are home to many species of fish, and the crystal clear water makes it easy to enjoy nature’s play of colours. The temperature is around 30 degrees Celsius.

We visited Mexico, specifically Cozumel, in connection with a cruise in the Caribbean. It was exciting to get to the island of Cozumel which is just off the east coast of Mexico, straight out to sea from Playa del Carmen. The cruise ships were lined up in the harbor and there was a stream of tourists along the entire harbor promenade.

San Miguel de Cozumel is a beautiful place with turquoise blue sea as far as we could see, and is the only town on Cozumel, as well as being the administrative center of the Cozumel municipality. Among the restaurants and bars down in the harbor is the world’s smallest Hard Rock Café. Cozumel’s beaches tempt you with relaxing beach life, refreshing juices from tropical fruits, swaying palm trees and a sparkling turquoise sea, you just have to enjoy the holiday life. We would love to return to Cozumel again.

Vi besøkte Mexico, nærmere bestemt Cozumel i forbindelse med cruise i Karibia. Det var spennende å komme til øya Cozumel som ligger like utenfor østkysten av Mexico, rett ut i havet fra Playa del Carmen. Cruisebåtene lå i kø i havna og det var en strøm av turister i hele havnepromenaden.

San Miguel de Cozumel er et vakkert sted med turkisblått hav så langt vi kunne se, og er den eneste byen på Cozumel, samt at den er adminstrasjonssentrum i Cozumel kommune. Blant restaurantene og barene nede i havna gjemmer verdens minste Hard Rock Café seg. Cozumels strender frister til avkoblende strandliv, forfriskende juice av tropiske frukter, vaiende palmer og et glitrende turkisblått hav er det bare å nyte ferielivet. Vi reiser gjerne tilbake til Cozumel igjen.
