Bergen is a city and municipality in Vestland and a former county surrounded by «The Seven Mountains». Bergen urban area had 259,958 inhabitants in 2020 (Wikipedia). Bergen was founded by Olav Kyrre in 1070 with the name Bjørgvin, which means «the green meadow between the mountains». The city grew quickly to become the largest in the Nordics from the 12th century to the 17th century, and Norway’s largest city until the 1830s. Bergen became the seat of the Gulatinget from the year 1300. The trading houses on Bryggen were already established in connection with the city’s foundation in 1070, and developed into an important trading center. From the 13th century, a number of northern German cities joined together in a common trading business with their own jurisdiction that shared profits and losses, and was named the Hanseatic League. From 1360, the Hanseatic League had one of its head offices with trading activities in the city until it was dissolved in 1669. Bergen was the European Capital of Culture in the year 2000. The city was the host city for the Eurovision Song Contest in 1986 and also the host city for The Tall Ship Races in 1993, 2001 and 2008. Various concerts, revues, festivals and many festivals are organized throughout the year. The Bergen Festival is the most important cultural event of the year, which takes place at the end of May and beginning of June. The festival is one of Europe’s leading cultural festivals, and the Nordic region’s largest music and theater festival, which is under the high patronage of His Majesty the King. We were in Bergen in 2019 for a couple of days’ visit. As a result of having limited time, we chose to visit Bryggen, Fisketorget, Grieghallen, Håkonshallen, took the Bybanen out to Lagunen shopping centre, visited family and wandered around in the city. We also had a goal of taking the Fløibanen up to the top, but as a result of the long queue to get up there, we chose not to as it would take up too much of the short time we had at our disposal. Bergen is a great city that we would love to go back to again.

Vi var i Bergen i 2019 på et par dagers besøk. Som følge av at vi hadde begrenset med tid valgte vi å ta et besøk til Bryggen, Fisketorget, Grieghallen, Håkonshallen, tok Bybanen ut til Lagunen shoppingsenter, besøkte familie og vandret rundt i byen. Vi hadde også et mål om å ta Fløibanen opp til toppen, men som følge av at det var lang kø for å komme opp dit, så valgte vi å avstå da det ville ta for mye av den korte tiden vi hadde til rådighet. Bergen er en flott by som vi gjerne drar tilbake til igjen.
