Barbados has been inhabited by the Kalinago people since the 13th century. In 1627, the first permanent settlers came from England, and Barbados became an English and later British colony. During this period, the colony operated with a plantation economy, dependent on the labor of African slaves who worked on the island’s plantations. The slave trade to the island continued until it was banned throughout the British Empire by the Slave Trade Act of 1807. Final emancipation of slaves in Barbados occurred over a period of five years following the Slavery Abolition Act 1833.

We have visited Barbados once in connection with a cruise in the Caribbean. It was an unforgettable experience to stroll along the inner canal harbor which was characterized by a rich boat life. It was good to feel the sun and the heat as we sat down at an outdoor restaurant to enjoy a local beer, and at the same time look out over the beautiful sea and admire the beautiful blue colors and the people’s life. There are also good opportunities for shopping here for those who like it.
