Auckland is located in the north of the North Island and is New Zealand’s largest urban area. The city has a population of 1,495,000 (2016) from a range of cultures, the majority being of British descent, but mainly Maori and people from the Pacific Islands and Asia (Wikipedia). Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city and most important commercial and industrial centre, with an international airport, a university and several museums. The city was founded in 1840, and was the capital until 1865 when Wellington became the capital with its central location on the southern tip of the North Island (Great Norske Leksikon; Google translated). We only had one night at the «Scenic Hotel Auckland» in Auckland before we went south to Levin and Wellington so we didn’t get to know the city. However, we ate delicious sushi at a nice sushi restaurant near the hotel we were staying at. Would have liked to have had more time there to get to know the city better.
