Ålesund is a municipality in Møre og Romsdal. The municipality got new boundaries from 1 January 2020 after the former Ålesund municipality was merged with Haram, Sandøy, Skodje and Ørskog as part of the municipal reform. From 1 January 2024, Haram will be restored as a separate municipality with its borders from before the merger. Ålesund had 67,382 inhabitants in the 2nd quarter of 2022 (Statistics Norway).

In the 18th century, trading activities were concentrated in Ålesund, and with the introduction of local self-government in Norway in 1837, Ålesund was established as a city municipality. The development of the town gained particular momentum in connection with the growth in fishing, fish processing and fish exports in the latter half of the 19th century.

In 1902, large parts of Ålesund burned to the ground. About 10,000 of the 12,000 people were left homeless. It only took a few years before the city was rebuilt according to the most modern architecture of the time, which was Art Nouveau. The characteristic of Art Nouveau is various decorative elements – such as waves, arches and geometric shapes, as well as asymmetry, hipped roofs or mansard roofs and transom windows. According to the international museum organization ICOMOS, the Art Nouveau town of Ålesund is one of the most important cultural monuments in Norway from the 20th century. In the second half of the 19th century, the town grew on the basis of the fishing industry, and today Ålesund is the center of one of Norway’s largest and most modern sea fishing fleets. Ålesund is the regional center for the whole of Sunnmøre and an important export port. The most important export goods are fish, fish products, furniture and more. We were in Ålesund in 2020 and stayed at Hotel Brosundet, which is a stylish hotel in a renovated Art Nouveau warehouse with a view over Brosundet. The hotel is centrally located with walking distance to most everything. We had a few nice days there with a lovely breakfast buffet, good service and pleasant staff. Among other trips we took, a trip to the top of the city mountain Aksla was a goal for us. We started from Byparken and walked the 418 steps up to the top of Aksla. At the top we ate lunch at «Fjellstua Aksla AS», which is a cozy restaurant where we could enjoy the incredibly beautiful view over the archipelago, the city center and the Sunnmørsalps. It is an unforgettable trip that we would definitely recommend.

På 1700-tallet ble handelsvirksomheten samlet i Ålesund, og ved innføringen av det lokale selvstyret i Norge i 1837 ble Ålesund opprettet som bykommune. Utviklingen av byen skjøt spesielt fart i forbindelse med veksten i fisket, fiskeforedling og fiskeeksport i siste halvdel av 1800-tallet.

Det tok bare få år før byen var bygd opp igjen etter den mest moderne arkitekturen på den tiden som var jugendstilen. I følge den internasjonale museumsorganisasjonen ICOMOS er jugendstilbyen i Ålesund ett av de viktigste kulturminnene i Norge fra det 20. århundret. I andre halvdelen av 1800-tallet vokste byen fram på grunnlag av fiskerinæringen, og i dag er Ålesund sentrum for en av Norges største og mest moderne havfiskeflåte. Ålesund er regionsenter for hele Sunnmøre og en viktig eksporthavn. Viktigste eksportvarer er fisk, fiskeprodukt, møbler med mer. Vi var i Ålesund i 2020 og bodde på Hotel Brosundet, som er et stilfullt hotel i en renovert lagerbygning i jugendstil med utsikt over Brosundet. Hotellet ligger sentralt med gangavstand til det meste. Vi hadde noen fine dager der med nydelig frokostbuffe, god service og hyggelig betjening. Blant andre turer vi tok, så var en tur på toppen av byfjellet Aksla et mål for oss. Vi startet fra Byparken og gikk de 418 trinnene opp til toppen av Aksla. På toppen spiste vi lunch på «Fjellstua Aksla AS» som er en koselig restaurant hvor vi kunne nyte den utrolig vakre utsikten over skjærgården, bysentrum og Sunnmørsalpene. Det er en uforglemmelig tur som vi absolutt vil anbefale.
