Alaska is a state in the United States, and includes North America’s most north-western peninsula. It was bought by Russia in 1867, despite the reluctance of the American people, for 7.2 million dollars. It is the largest state in the United States, and was admitted as the 49th state in the United States on January 3, 1959. The capital is Juneau, and the largest city is Anchorage. Alaska has 733,000 inhabitants (2020). The population consists of approximately 67 percent whites and approximately 15 percent Inuit, Aleuts and other indigenous peoples. The population has increased greatly since World War II. In the summer months, there is a considerable influx of fishermen and other seasonal workers, many of them of Norwegian descent.

Alaska’s economy has become increasingly dependent on income from oil and gas. In the late 1960s, exceptionally rich discoveries were made at the Brooks Range in the far north of the state. The construction of the Trans-Alaska pipeline from 1974 to 1977, which transports the oil to the shipping port of Valdez, east of Anchorage, has made Alaska the third largest oil producer in the United States after Texas and North Dakota. The oil and gas fields at Cook Inlet form the basis for a petrochemical industry in and around Anchorage. Gold, which created the 1890s gold rush, has declined in importance, but gold and silver are still the most valuable minerals. For environmental reasons, there has been debate in recent years to what extent the oil reserves found in nature and wildlife reserves should be extracted.

The rivers and the adjacent sea areas are rich in fish and form the basis for a rich fishery and a large fish processing industry. Salmon, halibut, herring, cod and shellfish are frozen or canned. Alaska is also referred to as the Land of the Midnight Sun, or The Last Frontier. We thought it was exciting to travel to a place we had heard a lot about. We had relatives and acquaintances who had emigrated in their time to create a new future for themselves on the west coast of North America with its rich fish stocks. The gold rush in Klondyke is also a story that is well described in the history books.

We had a nice trip in a landscape that had been similar to the Norwegian fjords. It was interesting to see the various places we visited and which are described in the blog.

Befolkningen består av cirka 67 prosent hvite og cirka 15 prosent inuiter, aleuter og andre urfolk. Folketallet har økt sterkt siden andre verdenskrig. I sommerhalvåret er det en anselig tilstrømning av fiskere og andre sesongarbeidere, mange av dem norskættede.

Alaskas økonomi er blitt stadig mer avhengig av inntekter fra olje og gass. I slutten av 1960-årene ble det gjort usedvanlig rike funn ved Brooks Range helt nord i delstaten. Alaska er også omtalt som Land of the Midnight Sun, «Midnattsolens land», eller The Last Frontier, «det siste grenseland». Vi syntes det var spennende å reise til et sted vi hadde hørt mye om. Vi hadde slektninger og bekjente som hadde emigrert i sin tid for å skape seg en ny fremtid ved Nord-Amerikas vestkyst med sine rike fiskeforekomster. Gullrushet i Klondyke er også en historie som er godt beskrevet i historiebøkene.

Vi hadde en fin reise i et landskap som var vært likt Norske fjorder. Det var interessant å se de ulike plassene vi besøkte og som er beskrevet i bloggen.
